Well I’ve had a good look around without going in beyond the outer case. All I can find is the buckled spring which clearly has been catching.

I think there should be a tin plate to stop that ?.

53 plate , I think there are 2 , One each side ??.

Maybe not ?, Just the side you are showing , To stop the spring hanging out ?.

Sorry , Just guessing,
Didn't look right that spring hanging out,
I have done a few Burman boxes, But as you say they are not talked about much.

Maybe take a file to the steel bit , To help the spring stay in ?,
Just at an angle at the top ?.

I’ll put some new springs in and see how they sit. I’m thinking it’s worth trying that before pulling the box down proper. The one that is straight seems to have clearance.
Fingers crossed it was causing the jumping out of gear!

Apologies, incorrect Burman exploded diagram now removed.
Regarding my issue of box jumping out of gear there was no gear indicator fitted, initial problem of no 4th was believed to have been caused by 'unrestrained' main shaft float caused by retaining lip to circlip to main bearing failing. According to Martyn G's article in MPH last month this type of failure can also occur with the bearing at the cover end.
The further issue of the box jumping out of gear was caused by worn dogs on the gear, whether this was as a consequence of the main shaft retaining lip to the circlip failure or not is not known, all I can say is it was not apparent until that initial issue had been addressed.

Yes Brian, That happened to mine , Years ago,,
Lost 4 th but got home steady in 3 rd,
Left the circlip in while being welded, So not to loose the shape,
Just needed a new circlip, Good Job.
Cheers Bill.
