G: Gearbox (Twin) Gear Change - Centering Spring Broken?

Lately, I experience that, when changing gears on my 1948 Rapide, the gear lever just stays in the selected position, means, you actively have to put it back in the center position, before selecting the next gear... - it works, but, it`s a bit annoying... - is there a centering spring, which might have broken? How complicated is it to change this? Any other concerns? Many thanks for your help! Ray

Hello Ray, It can be a bit tricky in there,
And it means taking the Exhaust off first, Which can be tricky if you cross the fine threads
in the cylinder head, Putting them back !.
It might be where the shaft goes through the alloy kick start cover,
Could be a bit sticky if the bike has been stood for a long time ?.
You could just take the inspection cap off and squirt some oil around the selection parts.

Undo the ET24/1, And look into the dry outer case,
Try and squirt some oil on the shafts G66As and G40,
Where they go through the outer case from the outside,
They are not stiff as a a rule,
If you do go inside , Try NOT to touch bolt 327 and G57,

There are 2 x G71 springs which help G70 spring,

Might be an idea to ask someone in the local VOC section ?,
And get some books on the bike,
Sorry don't know how long you have owned the bike.
Good Luck, Bill.

If you try and take the cover off , Keep gentle pressure ,
Tap the kick shaft gently inwards as you try and get the cover off,
As the kicker spring is strong and the shaft should stay where it is,
It will try and come out with the cover and everything will JAM UP !!,
Sorry it is hard for me to put it into words, It would be nice if you could find a friend ?.

Many thanks, Bill, for your kind advice! Got my Rapide now for over 10 years, have all the books, but not beeing the most talented mechanic, decided a few years ago to get it to Godet Motorcycles for a 30.000 GBP mechanical rebuilt... - unfortunately still some problems, however, managed to change and adjust a worn clutch (obviously not included in that price tag... ;-) ), but really would like to get her reliable on the road for the coming season...
...will at least follow your advice about the inspection cap and oiling the shaft, but probably need some advice about getting deeper in that subject. The local VOC section might be a good idea!
Thanks, Ray

Ray, If the oil thing does not work,
At the bottom of this Forum page,
On the right hand side , Click on , " The Mighty Garage ",
Mike in USA did a load of youtubes, And some of them are him working on his Twin,
Scroll through to find what you want,
Some of the ways Mike goes about it is not spot on ,
He was new to it himself,
But it will give you a good idea of what to do, And you can see what is going on in there,
Better than just words, Well my words anyway :) ,
We can talk you through it in stages ,If you get stuck , But it's hard to tell you everything in one go.
Good Luck Bill.

We had a case a little while ago, Where a chap took the cover off,
And part of it dropped out of where it should be, And gave him some trouble,
I think Greg in AUS, Guessed what he did ?,
It was easy to put right, Just needed to know how it went,
If I remember it was part of G59as ?, The bit that pivots dropped down out of location ?.
The old saying " easy when you know how ".

While oiling the shafts , I think you can see the G59as and other bits in there,
I would give them some oil too, While working the gear change back and forth ,
Being rebuilt, Some times spares are a bit tight ? and dry ?, You might be lucky ?.
There is a hole in the bottom of the outer case , So some oil will drop out onto the floor !!!!!,
Just mop it up for a few days.

Ray , Just had another thought,
It's in the books , But I have never had the trouble,
If the foot rests / Battery carrier is not adjusted right,
There can be tension pulling the Alloy plate that the gearbox cover screws to,
It gets worse as the engine gets hot and expands ?,
You can adjust it with the large nuts on the battery carrier,
Next time it gets sticky undo the footrests and give the long stud a tap to make the stud loose,
It some times grips the alloy distance pieces.

E80 nuts

Dear Bill, many thanks for this further advise! Just building up new wheels and as soon this is finished and the weather a bit milder, will give this a try... ;-) - sound logical!

I just re-read your initial issue........If you back off the footrest hanger nut and the gearshift works fine, then the battery tray adjusting E80 nuts just need setting up again as Bill suggested.

...as far as I remember now, this happened after renewing the clutchblades and adjusting the clutch, when I had the footrest loose... - might be, I tightened this up too much... - can`t wait to try this... ;-) Many thanks, Ray
