Would I do this mod today - no way. For a fraction of a second when changing gear - come on - VOC - very old children . . . .

Would not a Surtees/Quaife 5-speed cluster be a slick shifting alternative for those of us who are not strangled by sportive regulations (but that is not cricket or is it)!

Yes the 5 speed boxes are great for racing........especially with a dry multi plate and belt drive........big weight saving on the primary parts over stock. I liked the tall first gear, which gave you a great amount of acceleration off the blocks........certainly with a light weight bike.

Has anyone got a photograph of the gears with the alternate dogs removed?
Visited a long time Victorian Vincent man today he pulled out some parts he had removed from speedway engines /bikes he had bought over the years. These were very common modifications couple of examples pictured Also remember Phil Irving was often at races and I think built the first postwar Twin speedway sidecar in Victoria I forget the exact details but I know it’s in his biography he also names the builders of other early builders/riders my rapide crank cases came from one of these machines Happy Days

Must admit , When I did mine , I thought that's going to knock a few years off it's life,
But still going !, Not riding very hard now though :) .
