Four or five friction material plates?
Depends how thick they are ,

As Bill says, often one can only get 4 modern bonded plates in the basket, especially if the bike has been fitted with some thicker plain plates.
Having said that, I have thrashed my "C" Comet with 4 bonded plates and never suffered slip.
Alan Rennie [works employee] told me that Burman considered the 4 plate clutch was for solo work and the 5 plate for sidecar work.

I think also it depends on the clutch,
Some have deeper drums ?, Not sure but maybe deeper centres too ?.
You never know what you have these days,
Longer mainshafts !.
There are gearboxes on ebay that aren't for Vincents,
And outer covers , Check how many outer studs !.
