T: Fuel Tank Petseal Removal

I have an HRD tank which was lined with Petseal pre 2008 then painted. It has not been used since. The white fibreglass Petseal is coming off in large lumps with the aid of some nuts. But I want to ensure it is all removed. There are lots of awkward spots in the tank. What is best chemical to remove? Is there a business that specialise in removal? I intend to do a pressure test before deciding if new sealant is required.

Not sure about Petseal, but some lining formulations dissolve in acetone - worth a try. You'll need to be careful to keep it away from the paint, of course.

Unfortunately I have no idea what the original sealant is. It breaks out in white lumps. I know the tank was painted in 2008 so this stuff was applied before that

Tank Care Products as mentioned by Chris Launders also do a service whereby they remove sealant and reseal a tank. They’ve been around some time so should know what they’re doing…..

White and flaking off sounds like Kreem. Acetone or muriatic acid will get rid of Kreem. I've also been told white vinegar or apple cider vinegar will also work. If it is fiberglass resin in nature perhaps denatured alcohol. But all these may adversely effect paint, so be careful.

I have always thought people resort to these sealants far to quickly, if the tank is not leaking, surely it is far better to just clean the tank scrupulously, run with fuel filters, and carry on riding, try to store the tank dry if possible before laying up for long periods, maybe a splash of WD40 or thin oil in the tank before putting away for the winter.
