back when threads held socks together I bought my 1951 AJS 7R to ride on the road (for £50) Geoff Monty (of Monty and Ward) gave me a piece of paper covered in figures, "Memorise that" he said, "and if a copper stops you and can see you only have a rev counter, tell him the actual engine revs in top or whatever gear you are in to match the speed limit. the law says you need a means of indicating speed it doesn't say a speedometer".
