G: Gearbox (Single - Burman) How Much Lube is Enough?

Greetings All,

Peering through the inspection/fill hole on the Burman gearbox on my '50 B Meteor, I wonder how much lube is enough.

As we all know, there's no "level plug" or even a drain plug. When I look in with a strong light, I can see the lube covering half of the kickstart quadrant so the level is apparently at least up to where the kickstart shaft is. Is that enough? BTW, I've been using the Penrite semi-fluid grease.

Any advice/comments welcome!

There are two holes in the lower part of the inner casing which allow a flow of lubricant in to the main case. If you have the above measure it gets picked up by the gears and flung about. Obviously this doesn't work so well with plain old heavy grease, which is why the advice used to be to add an eggcup full of oil occasionally. Nowadays the semi- fluid grease is the duck's guts. The two bushes in the middle of the layshaft are lubricated by 1/8" cross drillings through the gears, another reason not to use grease alone.
