I wonder, has anybody come across this before? A grease nipple on the front right hand side of the gearbox fitted to this Comet.
Is it perhaps a mod that would have been completed by a reputable engineering company? Perhaps an owner/restorer self mod? Anybody able to help please?

I think its of little practical use nowadays
Most regular users have switched to semi fluid grease there are many options on the market introduced via the filler cap it soon gets everywhere inside the box

Seems a bit pointless when you can open the filler cap to put stuff in, unless there is some pipework added the other side which directs grease somewhere.

Hi Lee, looked in Paul Richardson's book which confirms it's to grease the selector mechanism. I believe pre 53 but I may be wrong regarding this date.

Here's mine, on an original 1951 gearbox. I've never used it, but I do put the bike on the right hand side stand every now and again. This allows
some SAE 80 to wash over the gear selector mechanism.

If you brake hard and if you have something which is more or less a fluid in the box then you will grease the selector ,too.
