Very sensible.

I bought a 1939 Velocette KSS some time back, and took the Altette horn apart for cleaning / adjustment / refinishing. It's hard to read in the pic, but on the inside of the resonator disc was inscribed "This Velo rebuilt by J. Gladston 1970"

Wow, I took my altette apart as well and there was, what looked like, registration numbers scratched into mine...

The standards of yesteryear were not as high as todays standards, your £25/£40 bike had to get you to work
college dancehalls holidays club night the pub then be raced every other month they were polished for hours
when they really needed rebuilding not thrashing, that was the life of my 1936 /8 KSS & HRD Rudge in the 50,s
Plenty of jobs because of low salarys so no money left at the end of each week Mom could I borrow for petrol.
Numbers were not high on the agenda alloy guards were they gave you 5mph more speed.
