To My mind the arm where the brake kable is connected is to Long. Because of the balance Bean there is enough force on the brake shoes. The sponginess doesn‘t matter because When you Ride you will Never Need so much Power in your Fingers that you Fell something spongy. Fest Vincent, some woerds of the black sheep . But I am shure whatever System you chose it is far better than original! Erik

That is my thinking too, you don´t need to squeeze that hard for good braking. But whatever you do to the standard brakes you are stuck with the old drums. So my guess is you will run out of road when hard braking from high speeds or downhill in Alps. The generated heat has to go out quickly so not to get into temperatures for fading out. A decent venting of the whole brake is essential for that type of riding.

I think you guys are right about the length of the arm, considering the balance beam. Still, sponginess is not good. You think it's caused by too much leverage? Maybe Vincent can work that out.

I'm some thousands of miles from any sort of Alps and don't ride all that fast anymore, so not worried about brake fade. My aim is to be able to stop when some idiot texting on his "smart" phone runs a stop sign.

Thats sums it up Gary, you are spot on. When Road riding nowadays (both sides of the pond) a lot of slowing down is made by lugging that big lazy engine down and its the brakes emergency stop performance that really matters. The only screen in a car should be a windscreen.

I think we are Talking about the new Speet brakes, Not the standard ones with the poorer Design. This is what I did. with the Speet brakes.

Vincent, in the photo, your post no 8, I see the shoe pivot ends are slotted. Can I ask, is this just for assembly or are they eccentric adjusters ?

Regards, Terry.

This is (was) series no 1 Terry. And indeed slotted, as they were eccentric. It was done so we could see the same position on both shoes. The new ones are also. But than double eccentric, with a bush between bolt and hole. as to cater for adjusting this position. So we can set them up, to machine as little as posible from the linings.

Thank you, that is a mod I have been considering, for the same reasons. I think it removes the need to turn oversize linings, simply fit standard and adjust up ! Just like most older cars.
Regards, Terry.
