The Comet lives

After 3 winters of restoration and a few dollars I finally rode the Comet this week. Purchased as a basket case from a friend's estate and built as a tribute to him. I rode a rapide in the 60's and was a VOC member then. I have several nice 500cc Brit singles but did not expect to have another Vin. Those are not marks on the tank but reflections of the clouds in the black paintwork.

Hi Roger,

Was this bike in Alberta? Nice job on the restoration.

Best,

Gene.
Yes, it was bought over from the UK by somebody who moved to Calgary. It was missing some major parts when it got here. It changed hands a few times. Ended up with Jim Ross who collected a lot of the missing parts but never got to finish it.

Roger,

I have a cute story for you. I was riding my Comet from Vancouver to Montana for the 2016 North American Rally. My first stop of the second day was in Princeton BC at DQ, as I was quietly having my breakfast I could see a person looking at my bike. He came running in from outside looking for the rider and went around each table until he finally got to mine. He asked is that your Vincent? I said yes. He started talking about bikes and living in Calgary, Alberta. He said his friend had a comet in boxes or parts in Calgary and I can only assume it might be the bike you have on the road.

I wish I could remember his name but it was so along ago now.

Hi Gene, um, first stop on the second day ? Princeton is only 4 hours from Vancouver ! Did you push it there ?

I lived on Salt Spring Island at that time and the only ferry leaving in the afternoon put me in Hope at 9:30-10pm first day. Breakfast on the second day was in Princeton.

I don't think too many people are crazy enough to do 2500 miles on a Comet solo. Photo top of the Salmo-Creston Pass in the Selkirk Mountains.

Well you did have an escort on the return leg from Missoula. Or should I say babysitter, especially after the meltdown at Chtistina Lake.

Mike, you must be a sucker for punishment as you've signed up to baby site me again in a couple of weeks. I promise I wont throw the toys out of the cot.
