Just for confirming my thinking I got the 5" Chronometric and its angle drive for checking the threads on it: The cable joint is definitely M 12x1 metric, no 26 tpi would fit , see photos below. I tried a common 12x1 stainless nut, perfect fit, a bit close. So why should they have a 23/32 " 26tpi imperial on the other thread ? Sure, the thread on the Smiths drive was a bit oversize for a M 18x1 die to screw on initially. But I do not think it was meant to be some weird imperial size. Instead the man on the machine may have had a split die for thread cutting or a thread rolling head . So then he may have passed threads lightly oversize for modern specifications when he did not reset his tools to care for wear.
Maybe the drive gear thread can remain as is when you get a new M 18x1 tap for fabricating nuts or a case to take it. So only when things are too tight better have a die as well.
