Got a comet with a busted big end ? try this it ain`t rocket science !!!
Main tools you will need : A Lead Hammer
Hydraulic press
Truing Jig
Vice and various spacers.
Beg steal or borrow all of these ,if this is not possible hit the DELETE button now .
Pic 1 and 2 show the Dollies needed I used 3 but 2 will do . the long one is to hold the whole assembly in the vice to stop any turning while undoing the nuts.
Pic 3 and 4 show the spacers needed to push the Small end and the outer race into the Rod.
Pic 5 and 6 show the whole assembly in the vice.
Pic 7 " jacking screws " to open up the wheels while still in the vice. 3 off and open up the wheels very slowly.
Pic 8 shows the wheels apart.
Pic 9 shows a shaft being checked for true BUT leave well alone since this will mean a extensive machining operation and to coin a phrase "if it ain`t broke etc " The truing jig will only use the bearing surfaces close to the Fly Wheel .
Pic 10 shows the Pin and Thrust washers - if these are blue or scored turn them round and use again.
A point to make here is that when pushing in he new pin is that the oil delivery hole is at a 11 -o-clock position relative to the Con Rod ( at Top Dead Center ) .This is so that the rollers get a dose of cold ,thick oil before the big push. there is some debate as to this , some say it is not important .
Pic 11 shows the truing jig -your Fly wheels when together will sit in the four rollers and be close up to the Flywheel edge The rollers will simulate the Main Bearings .
Finally , and this is the best bit ,mark the max run out and then bash that spot with your Lead Hammer - it will take several goes but when all is correct the Max run out will be 0.0000 at best and 0.002 at worst.
Pic 12 shows 4 sets with a best run out reading of 0.0005 and 0.0015 worst.
Torque the nuts down to the specified value as per the instruction sheets ( 150 Ft Lbs ? )

Was the big end eye actually round........many are not.......when you press in a new big end liner, it just becomes oval as well.......Only way to fix that is hone the rod, install an oversize liner then re hone to final size.

can I have one of the four in pic 0516?
Hi Nobby
Did these some time ago and are now in Comet engines as far north as Liverpool and as far south as Cornwall .
With most of us V-0-C " Passing over " and widows selling Flywheels they do come up for sale either in the MPH or the E _ Scrap _ Bay.
Look at these on the E Bay - in the search box type in this number ( it will take you to a pair of new Wheels for a Twin. )

How do you size the big end outer race for bearing clearance?
Hi
The outer diameter of the Big End outer race is a press fit into the Con Rod eye.NEVER seen a oval eye and honing would be the answer here.
The Pin , Rollers and inner Diameter of the outer race are made to give a rolling fit of 0.0004.
Only once did I see a undersized pin ( been reground ) and had to order larger rollers to give the 4 tenths fit.
This also meant careful filing of the Roller cage slots ( Alpha ).
Over the counter pins fit straight in - it ain`t rocket science!!!

That is odd because I have never measured a Vincent big end eye that was not oval to some degree. It was enough of a problem that Alpha produced a publication regarding “Special Big End Bearings for Vincent Motorcycles“. and they stated that to get maximum benefit from the caged roller it is desirable to grind the outer races internally after they are pressed into the connecting rods so that any ovality caused by distorted rods will be removed.
This problem was also discussed in some of their other literature and they mention supplying a partly finished outer race that needs to be sized after installation. There are NOS Alpha big end bearings floating around that come with the outer race pre- fitted, but better to toss the outer race and purchase one that can be sized after installation. If the outer race is only slightly oval, then it’ll likely survive ok given how these bikes are used, but Alpha’s advice to size them after installation is a much better way to go. Even if the rod eye is round, there is a good chance it won’t be after the race is pressed in.
