Hi there, Is the drive side ball bearing supposed to be a neat slide fit into the steel housing. If so is it ok to use some bearing mount loctite or leave it as is. Due to the large one inch ID Thackery type spacer washer between the two bearings it seems like it might need to move perhaps, given the end loads on the crank are taken by the smaller ball race on the timing side. Any help would be great, as I'm about to reassemble as of tomorrow..............Cheers...........Greg.

Yes, Greg, exactly as you said - but without loctite. It does need to be able to move a tad (precision engineering term) under the influence of the Thackeray washer.

I don't wish to hi-jack your question, but, while we are on the subject, does anyone know of a source of that Thackeray washer?

I think in some of the spares I received with this bike that there is one spare of those large washers. It is certainly a big bugger. I'm not sure the fact it allows some movement between the two drive side bearings is really necessary, and a simple spacer would be good enough. With the age of the cases and housings the less movement in there the better. But only if the original washer is unavailable.

Greg,
I was thinking of a spacer - but thin enough to add a homemade belleville washer.
I heard somewhere that, depending upon the source and machining of the engine sprocket taper - and the d/s mainshaft taper, it is possible for the sprocket to push up against the bearing just before the tapers lock-up. One to look out for...

I was thinking about maybe making a spacer and then using a wave washer (if I can find one the correct size). I cannot imagine the bearing moves more than a few thou if at all. Once the engine cools down who's to say it will move back anyway unless I'm missing something?

Greg,

You may be able to source the Thackery washer from: Keables in Melbourne. Ph 03 9231 6400 or www.keables.com.au They have an amazing range of stuff - much more than they list on the site or the on-line catalogue

You will need to know the size ID, OD etc

I'm guessing the bearing is tight on the shaft, thus does it even need to be a spring. I have not tried to put the crank in yet so just trying to figure this out in my head.

When rebuilding an A (Not Mine) we determined that a new housing would be a better plan as the bearing a amrginal fit in the existing one, so ordered one from Conways which they said was in stock.... You just know, don't you. They shipped it 3 or 4 months later and instead of having the correct fit it was several thou loose -- Oh just send it back and we'll send you another one - right. The old one went in.
