Dear All,
I would like to know if now (5 years after this thread was posted), there is any new conformed experience about the best Indian made tanks, on e-bay you have prices from 100 Pounds up.
I would need anyway to modify the tank, as i am looking into building a large capacity tank, but at least if i buy an already made tank, i could cut off and use the bottom part and the UFM/Oil tank tunnel.
If anybody as recent experience with a particular e-bay seller, please let me know!
Thanks!!
The Indian made petrol tanks were mentioned at the last GCM. I think that some tanks fit much better than others. A jig to get the fixings in the right place so that it fits onto the UFM sorted out the biggest problem.
You may not want to pay the Spares Company price for a new tank if you are going to cut it to make it bigger so I would have thought that an ebay tank to modify for £100 or so would be worth the risk.

I agree with Big Ed, but don't forget that you will likely pay almost twice as much by the time you get your hands on it - by the time the Import Duty, VAT, PO Fees etc are paid...

I didn't have to pay anything extra on the one i got but that was 2 years ago..Total cost with postage was about £150..
I got it to fit a Comet and knew that the front mounts were likely to be way off,and they were. I also found that the tunnel at the rear of the tank needed to be widened as it hit the bolt for the Comet frame tie, but if you look at a lot of genuine tanks you can see that the seam has been hammered to get the same result. Oh I also removed the Shark fishing hooks that passed for pump mounts..John

Thank you all,
can you reccomend a specific supplier? or they all sell the same tanks from the same manufacturer?

A careful examination of the bottom of the tanks reveals at least three variations here. Also the alloy tank on offer seems too wide at the front mounts. As I mentioned somewhere else, a member somewhere in the eastern United States faithfully replicated the original tank bottom.Like everything else on the machine it was done that way for a purpose, as noted above. Does anyone out there recall who this was?

Most are made in small workshops (not 'factories') in Karol Bagh, the part of Delhi where all the motorcycle businesses are gathered together; think of a handful of guys sat on the floor of a space about the size of a single (car) garage fabricating sheet to fit a wooden template. I get where you're coming from; the best from India are probably just about right (unless you need a concours winner), the worst are nowhere near....

The Spares Co lists unpainted tanks T1/6AS/I/U (GBP 421 for members) that should be satisfactory. I believe they sent a jig to their supplier in India to help with quality.
The Indian tank I got from the Spares Co was only 3 gallon although it fitted OK. I grew it to 4 gallon. Cheers, Stu.

I bought my Vincent gas tank from eBay. Seller : vintage.export . Member since 2009 with excellent feedback. I have also bought Royal Enfield parts with excellent results. Bought my tank in 2016 and was delivered to USA via DHL tracking. I had to modify rear tank mount. Tire pump tangs were a bit crude but I cut them off. A little work with a dremel/small file would have made them prettier. Petcock mounts are at an angle which is the easy way to tell if a tank is made in India. Fuel valves fit correctly and threaded for BSA/triumph/Norton replicas. Gas and Oil holes fit correctly. Front mounts fit correctly. Has lower mounts for V-twin near rear which the comet does not use. Bolts fit correctly on that mount.

Do you mean the tie bolt tags that has the 1/2" tube to stop the rear from spreading?
If you do then the comet uses that as well..John
