I do not participate in any social media platforms, but posting here connects me to them more than I would wish, but I enjoy the Forum. It seems with the internet you are either in or you are out. You cannot be slightly pregnant.

Facebook is a surveillance company. The general public does not view it as such, but if you look at any one or all of their problems they are all related to its surveillance functions.

It is funny that my daughter refers to the bike forums that I use as "Facebook for old gits".............

Whilst I understand the fears of using Facebook I would not offer an opinion on it if I have never used it.

How to do facebook without getting done by facebook

Create yourself a new email account using Gmail, Yahoo, whatever, what you want is an email address that you will only use for facebook. When creating the email profile enter only the minimum required information.

Never use your personal 'real' email address for any social on line activity unless you absolutely trust the site, facebook is NOT trustworthy. read the real news, not faked. The only time to use a business email address on facebook is if you actually intend to do business on facebook. It should go without saying that you should never use a business email address assigned to you by your employer for any non employment related internet activity unless you want to get fired.

If you use a PC you can create a new user on your PC. If you have done this right you will need to login as the new user you created. Any up to date Windows, Apple or Linux PC enables the creation of multiple users, ordinary users with default permissions are not able to access files created by other users unless the user that created the file allows it by sharing. Default is not shared, keep it that way. The new user is only to be used for social media, so don't create or share any files with the new user that you don't want all over the internet.

Open a browser while logged in as the new user and create a new face book account, if you already have a FB account, consider deleting it, definitely stop using it. Be very careful about accessing facebook on a phone or tablet that has your real data and contacts on it, make sure you turn off facebook permission to access your phone and email contacts on Android, apparently Apple has already taken care of this on iphones and ipads, but you need to check. As far as I can tell my Android phone information is available to every user, so my phone is not safe for Facebook or similar social sites, Iphone apparently does the same thing, check, if your spouse's account is added to your phone are you or they able to read your email and contacts? If the answer is yes, do not use your phone for facebook unless you are absolutely certain there is nothing on your phone that can hurt you in any way..

Android tablets are cheap enough that you can probably afford to have a tablet just for social media with only the personal information you need for FB ie, one email address not used for anything else, and no contact information for anyone else, including email contacts.

Uncheck all facebook notifications unless you really want to know that Dick Gazinya liked this, and Mary QuiteContrary liked that. Make sure your facebook profile does not have any phone numbers or other email addresses than the one you need to create an FB account. Be creative with the FB profile so long as it won't come back to bite you later, leave stuff blank that is optional, or make something up that amuses. Facebook will ask for permission to view your contacts, the answer is either 'get stuffed' if you actually have contact information for other people on the device or user you use to log in to FB, or 'fill your boots' if you have none, and no intention to ever have, contact information on the phone, tablet or PC you use for facebook.

Be careful about who you friend on facebook, you may learn things about friends and family you did not want to know.
Join groups you are interested in like the Vincent group. Half the postings on FB are either ads or fake news, use the like button with discretion, like the wrong thing and you will get more of the same. I only like stuff posted by people I know, and who I know they know how to avoid looking like an idiot for the benefit of the entire Facebook audience, which might also include (truly) intelligent life from outer space.

I was on face book many years ago and some one wanted to message me and it was a man exposing his self on camera I made a complaint and had men making online advances towards me and people in france who were trying to come over to uk and as a single female made up my mind face book has load of very sick prevs on there so i deleted my account and never looked back.
i did set the account to people I knew on there but they are some times link to the unknown that is how they work it as i got a photo link to friends account and I do know of in the past of accounts being hacked so better safe then sorry and stay of it and I have life in the real world and do as little as I can online and use other people internet etc to access any thing I need at time.

So talk about prophetic coincidences. My i(diot)Phone is linked to my email accounts. It pinged when Roslyn made her post above to let me know that someone has posted to a thread I'm watching on this forum. Nothing unusual there. Then suddenly it goes wild! Nine emails to my email account from an online dating site that I don't belong to nor have I belonged to in the past. I met my wife through on an online dating site 14 yrs ago. Not the one that emailed me though. Anyway, the email account I used, I trashed when she moved in and dumped my subscription. Then I noticed they weren't even addressed to my current or old email account. Makes me wonder if the little treacherous electrons are duplicating my emails and blasting them out willy nilly through cyberspace.
