Just to update the forum members. Although the BaT auction for John's Black Shadow racer did not meet reserve I was able to negotiate a transaction with the seller afterward as we were close. The bike will be going to NJ where I'll carefully get it running again with a focus on preserving it as much as possible as is. It's not going to be put back to original condition or flipped. I'll put a tail light on it and perhaps a headlight and look forward to enjoying it a bit on the street. I've reached out to John and he has been most helpful with the bikes details and history.
