Burman 4th Gear Selector Meltdown

Just a thought - There are some other reasons why the sliding dog for 4th gear (or any others for that matter) may not engage deeply enough:-
Too much end float on the selector shaft
Wear on the pins of the selector fork(s)
Wear on the selector forks

Any or a combination of these could contribute to the problem - but I must say - partly for my own peace of mind - that I would expect some problems with jumping out of 4th as an early warning before the "welding" took place.

I hardly like to ask, but had the faulty boxes run out of lubricant before the failure and what lubricant had been used?

My one when it failed had ample Castrol spherol and some 140 stuff..... and no my foot was not on the gear selector. Just wondering whether the Vincent Drawing Team could shed some light on the correct dimensions. Have the team done drawings for the Burman box?

Matty,
Mine was loaded with grease. What fell out was the consistency of custard but I didn't weigh it before I slung it. Wish I had now.
Everthing except the hot bit was greasy even inside the selectors.
Both selector pins have similar slop and the cam endfloat is common to the layshaft engagements.
The more I think about the reasons the morre bemused I become.

Hello Vic - I would like your damaged Burman bits, but live in Essex so do not know how I would pick them up or get them to tatty500 so have not made a bid yet. Any ideas?
Some sort of courier delivery must be cheaper than driving around to get them I think.

I know people going to this weekend's Pie and Pint, then there is Shepton A/J tomorrow and Kempton the week after at which I am foraging as usual. Derek Wheeldon or Paul Adams are usually at Kempton and maybe Dave Hills is going to the AGM.....I can check.

Either make a bid or suggest reasonable buy it now price..... will have to work out how to change advert for you to make the purchase but an Sure Graham will help in the interests of working on the problem to the benefit of all.

Matty,
my son-in-laws parents live in Mayland, so from here to there (or vice-versa) ((or both))shouldn't be too difficult assuming none of us are in a tearing hurry.

I have made a small bid, but think the best solution would be to get the parts to tatty500 first because he could then get them to his son in law at Mayland , which is only a few miles from my village, after he has had a look at them.
Otherwise I will have to drive to Bracknell which is 90miles from here!, because I think shall not be going to any of the other venues.
