Can anyone tell me the correct place the Altette horn was mounted on a 1949 Comet please?

Best regards,

Steve.

Thanks Martyn. The bike i am buying does not have the horn fitted there, could it be fitted somewhere else? Its a 1949 'Transition' bike.

Best regards,

Steve.

The prototype Comet/Meteor had the battery mounted across the machine in a similar position to that used on the twin but with the fixing stud on timing side. This used a different battery carrier from the later production singles. The rear brake pedal was of a different design from the production models and was a long pedal pivoted from the pillion footrest. With this arrangement it is unlikely that the horn could have been mounted on the drive side pillion plate as per the twin. All catalogue photos and those in the motorcycle press only show the timing side of the machine but it is just discernable that the horn is mounted under the nose of the saddle using the sidecar mounting tube in the rear of the UFM as in the standard Comet arrangement. If your horn is mounted on the pillion plate it could be evidence that the machine had been used with a sidecar. Incidentally early production singles used four bolts to mount the standard battery platform .

There are spacers,FT175/1 x 2 a stud F35/1, washers and two 3/8" B.S.F. nuts. needed to fit the horn properly. The "LUCAS" on the chrome bezel is uppermost, but it is probably better to fit the terminals at the bottom, keeping live leckertricity that little bit further from fuel and places it might cause sparkles. This is different to the standard Twin fitment. You probably know all this but the horn should be HF1234 with a raised bezel, hexagon acorn nuts and a flat alloy tone disc. I believe some 1951 machines had alloy or MAZAK bezels, can anyone confirm this?

I have such a bezel (minus horn). I think it is alloy as it polishes up. It came off one of the Comets I had in the sixties but as it was slightly damaged I changed it for a chomium version.

My late 52 built Shadow does not have a chrome bezel on the horn.

Thanks chaps. I have attached a picture of said machine, clearly there is no horn where it 'should be'. I am getting the bike in 2 weeks, so will drop round to see the current owner next week to see where its hidden!

Best regards,

Steve.
