I actually tried to talk a friend (who shares my fondness for juvenile behaviour and has buckets of money) into building one on his ocean front property. His wife wasn't having it..... speaking of miscreants.

Firearms as defined under Title 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(3)(C) are devices designed to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive. So springs, compressed gases, twisted cord, and massive weights are all fair game. However I suspect the authorities would take a dim view if you were to place some miscreant of some description in the sling of the trebuchet and fling him/her a few hundred yards through the air. Though I agree that would be gobs of fun.:D

when I was an engineering apprentice I remember seeing a film on explosive forming using an BSA single cylinder engine with a forming jig fitted on top of the head directly connected to the combustion space it only fired once per item and then was repositioned and the jig replenished but it certainly produced formed items in alloy sheet I expect the film has peculated to You tube by now nothing is hidden nowadays

I just looked up explosive forming. Evidently it is used in the aerospace industry quite a bit. It is categorized as either "unconfined" or "confined" and is used to form difficult materials such as nickle, titanium, and certain aluminum alloys. It uses either TNT, RDX, dynamite, or gaseous chemicals. Used in low production of large metal parts.
Seems to be a few videos on You Tube about it. Interesting.
